Drug and Controlled Substances Crimes

Drug offenses range from the almost benign possession of small amounts of marijuana that are prosecuted as non-criminal violations all the way to A-1 felonies that can end with a defendant receiving a potential life sentence.

Generally, possessions of small amounts of many drugs are criminal misdemeanor offenses that are punishable by up to one year in jail.  Possession of larger amounts of drugs or selling, manufacturing, distributing or trafficking in marijuana or other controlled substances are serious felonies that frequently result in draconian prison sentences being imposed in addition to requiring that the defendant submit to  having DNA samples taken.

Most people know about many of the drugs that are illegal, including heroin, morphine or other opiates, methadone, cocaine (crack, free base or crystal), stimulants such as methamphetamine, hallucinogens such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), phencyclidine (commonly called PCP or "angel dust"), ecstasy, mescaline, peyote, psilocybin, depressants, tranquilizers such as valium or benzodiazepam, prescription narcotic painkillers such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, Percocet or vicodin.  Many people do not know that it is also illegal to give your friend or family member a prescription pill that was not prescribed for them or even to possess regular prescription drugs without a valid prescription, although such possession does not usually end up with either a prosecution or a penal punishment, unless the possession is for major amounts of the medicine.

The bottom line is that no matter what type of drug crime you are charged with, you need a lawyer to defend you who is familiar with defending drug cases and taking advantage of the many diversionary programs and alternatives to incarceration programs that are available in many of the courts in the metropolitan area.  That will enable you to obtain the best result possible.
